| Cut off from the world for centuries, Ladakh remains unchanged by the modern world. Bounded by two of the world's mightiest mountain ranges, the Great Himalaya and the Karakoram, this is a region which fuses ancient religion and a harsh environment to create a culture of endurance and independence. Known as "Little Tibet", Ladakh is the remotest and least populated district of India, situated on a high altitude plateau and renowned for its beautiful mountain scenery and Buddhist culture. Villages are located up to 4,500 metres altitude and one only needs to look at the wizened faces of the inhabitants to realise that it is a harsh and demanding place to live. The overwhelming wildness makes the landscape at once appealing and awe-inspiring whilst the ancient civilization combined with Buddhist simplicity make for a captivating people.
