| The Silk Road 28 August 2009 - 13 September 2009 |

| The greatest East-West trade route that ever existed, the Silk Road spans harsh deserts, frozen mountains and many centuries of tumultuous history. The precious shimmering material was a source of wonderment and much speculation when it first emerged from Imperial China more than 2000 years ago, and it quickly became highly coveted in Roman society. However Silk was only one part of the trade conducted along the Silk Road - gold, precious metals, incense, ivory, textiles, spices, furs and rhubarb also travelled back and forth along the inhospitable route. More significant than any of these precious cargoes, though, was something without a price - ideas, technologies and religion.
